The Comm Ed Department will be offering Algebra and Geometry tutoring for students on Wednesdays and Fridays starting next week. To register, students must sign up the day before attendance. They may come to the main office after 2 pm to register and pay. Payment is due before attendance. The cost is $15/session.
The tutor's name is Mr. Lavender. We will take only 5 students per day. Students must check into the office on the day of attendance to meet up with Mr. Lavender. He will take them to the media center. No student will be able to sign up for multiple days at a time. This will give each student an equal chance to get tutored. There will be no exceptions made. Refunds will not be offered if students skip their session. Rescheduling will be offered on a per case basis. There are no activity buses on Wednesdays and student must be pick up promptly at 5. There are buses available Fridays but student should tell Mr. Lavender if they are riding so they do not miss the bus. Students should come with work that they need assistance with. There will not be a lesson taught. If your student is interested in applying to any of the accelerated high school programs offered in Duval County, the application period is now open!
*ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED THROUGH THE PARENT FOCUS PORTAL* Applications for accelerated programs (IB, AICE, Early College, etc.) will remain open from December 1st to January 25th. Magnet applications will be open from January 1st - February 28th. If you have questions about different high schools and the programs they offer feel free to contact Ms. Spencer. You can also contact your schools of interest for tour dates and more information. Follow the link below to see the district's guide to completing the magnet/accelerated programs application. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FLVS is the online school system used by the state of Florida. In order to take an online course through FLVS, it must be approved by your student's school counselor. Please reach out to the school counselor BEFORE you request the course. We will not approve a course if we have not yet discussed it with a parent or guardian.
FLVS has flexible enrollment so students can start any time during the year, including over the summer. It is self-paced so students are responsible for staying on track. If a student goes too long without completing work they will get DROPPED from the course. When a student gets dropped they must then re-enroll and start from the beginning. School counselors can monitor student progress and if we notice that work is not being completed, we try to reach out to the family before the student gets dropped from the course. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks for a student to get assigned to a class after it gets approved. Be patient! FLVS enrolls students in classes as teachers and class seats become available. Middle school students (6th - 8th) are eligible to take courses through FLVS to make up credits for courses they previously failed. However, we strive to give students the opportunity to take the course at LaVilla before recommending FLVS. In Duval County, it is a high school requirement that each student completes one online course in order to graduate. The most common courses for students to take to fulfill this credit are (1) HOPE and (2) Drivers Ed. The HOPE course also fulfills the high school physical education requirement. 8th graders that have been promoted to the 9th grade are eligible to take these courses in the summer between their 8th and 9th grade year. Your student's requests will continue to come to LaVilla until their first day of 9th grade. Therefore, if you wish to request these courses please reach out to Ms. Spencer, the 8th grade counselor. Any additional questions on this matter can be directed to either of the school counselors. |
